What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a holistic, natural treatment with its origins in ancient China, dating back thousands of years. It forms part of a wider system of healthcare known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and it is an effective, natural and popular form of health care that is being used by people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds
The underlying principle behind TCM is that Qi or life force flows through the body in pathways or channels known as meridians. Perfect health is a free flow of Qi. When this Qi is blocked and is unable to flow freely this means that the body is out of balance. This imbalance, blockage or stagnation can result in illness and/or pain.
Whilst both acupuncture and TCM do indeed treat the ´symptoms´that a patient will present, a great deal of focus is placed on the cause of the problem (the root or indeed roots) of the problem, at the same time. The professional TCM practitioner is trained to assess an individual, looking at all aspects of the person, to identify imbalances and work in a manner that will assist the body to find its equilibrium.
Acupuncture treatment is extremely safe. A typical treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points along the body’s meridians which help to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of qi . I may also stimulate the acupuncture points using other methods, including moxibustion, cupping, electro-stimulation and massage in order to re-establish the flow of qi.
